cast iron cookware

Antique Cast Iron Cookware

can be enjoyed by all people but the key is becoming educated on the cast iron products and their history and their value.

The first step in collecting antique cast iron cookware is to do research. The most popular brand worth collecting is Griswold, which produced cast iron cookware from 1865 to the late 1950s. Their pieces were made with black iron and Griswold used different signatures on the back of each piece during different periods of time. The first mark was “Erie” in reference to the city in Pennsylvania where the company was founded. The following marks in sequential order were: large trade marks, small trade marks, slant letter marks and diamond marks. Also, numbers imprinted on the cookware indicated the size of the cast iron cookware and collectors use the number and the marks to determine the value and rarity.
